Stand-up comedian Jaguar Bennett salutes evil and mocks humanity in his one-man show “How to Be Wicked,” playing every Friday in June at Zombie Joe’s Underground Theatre in North Hollywood
“It’s like studying Nietzsche, but in easy-to-understand comedy form,” says Bennett
LOS ANGELES, May 27 — Fringe Festival stand-up comedian Jaguar Bennett will bring his acclaimed-by-idiots one-man show, “How to Be Wicked: The Easy Course for Beginners” to Zombie Joe’s Underground Theatre Group in North Hollywood for a special series of shows every Friday night in June.
“How to Be Wicked,” which Bennett called “a crude mélange of vulgarized Nietzschean philosophy and even more vulgar humor,” will play Friday, June 5; Friday, June 12, Friday, June 19; and Friday, June 26, at Zombie Joes’s Underground Theatre Group, 4850 Lankershim Blvd., North Hollywood, CA 91601. All shows are at 11 p.m.; tickets are $15 at the door. For reservations, call the Zombie Joe reservation line at (818) 202-4120.
“How to Be Wicked” is rated adults only for strong sexual content, disgustingly foul language and the sickening corruption that is Bennett’s moral sense.
Bennett described “How to Be Wicked” as a short introductory course in how to use the power of evil for fun and profit. “Morality is a vile lie — a hideous scheme to reduce us all to impotent slavery. Only by embracing our own inner powers of evil can we truly be free. The show will explain how morality is constructed to chain us and how we can liberate ourselves from it. It’s kind of like studying Nietzsche, but in easy-to-understand comedy form. Plus, there will be crude sexual humor,” Bennett said.
Sounds … edgy. But at a time when terrorists are slaughtering innocents in the Middle East, when America is threatened by random shootings, police brutality and other senseless violence, when life on earth itself is threatened by global warming, is it really a good idea to encourage people to do more evil?
“If I wasn’t willing to sacrifice the well-being of all humanity in order to promote my shoddily written, clumsily performed, trivial and pointless comedy act, I wouldn’t be living up to my own principles,” said Bennett.
“How to Be Wicked” played to sold-out audiences at Fresno’s Rogue Festival in March, where it earned such rave reviews as “Machiavelli was naïve, Hitler lacked ambition, and terrorists are short on style compared to Jaguar … he is crude, vile, foul, vulgar, and strangely persuasive”; and “Jaguar Bennett is a polished orator with a well-thought-out presentation that will knock your socks off. This show is a must-see!”
Bennett asks that all comments, complaints and threats of violence related to the show be posted to Twitter, Facebook and Instagram using the hashtag #jagwicked.
Bennett, who in real life is far too cowardly to do real evil, is a writer, comedian and actor based in the glittering artistic metropolis of Fresno, California, which is a real clue to his actual talent and artistic success. He has been a frequent fixture of Fresno’s Rogue Festival (which is like a Fringe Festival, only less so). Bennett’s earlier Rogue Festival productions include “Crime Doesn’t Pay Enough” (2002), “Pain, Guilt, and Humiliation” (2005), “Sanitized for Your Protection” (2006); “Bullet Point: A Tragedy Told in the Form of a PowerPoint Presentation” (2007); and “The Agony of Living” (2014).
